Canon EOS 80D Digital SLR: Major Features
The EOS 80D is aimed at enthusiast photographers looking to progress from entry level DSLR shooting to a powerful, versatile and responsive WiFi camera in which to explore photography and advanced movie making. The major features of the Canon EOS 80D camera are outlined below.
24.2 Megapixel (APS-C) CMOS sensor
The Canon EOS 80D features a high resolution 24.2 megapixel APS-C sized CMOS sensor offering a native ISO range from 100 ISO to 16,000 ISO. An expanded H1 (25,600 ISO) sensitivity setting is available to help cope with very low light situations.
The Canon EOS 80D also features Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, designed to provide improved autofocus during Live View and movie shooting compared to more entry level DSLR camera models in the company lineup (Rebel digital SLR camera series).
Dual Pixel CMOS AF employs a new Canon CMOS sensor with which all of the effective pixels are able to perform both still imaging and phase-detection AF simultaneously to achieve dramatically improved AF performance during Live View and video shooting.
The Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology in the Canon EOS 80D camera features enhanced tracking sensitivity and is compatible with the full line of Canon EF Series lenses, including the new Canon EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM standard zoom lens.
Fast 7 frames per second drive system with reduced noise and vibration
The Canon EOS 80D offers a maximum shutter speed of 1/8000 sec., and up to 7 frames per second continuous shooting to assist in capturing the action as it happens.
An improved mirror drive mechanism in the Canon EOS 80D enables high-speed, low-vibration performance providing for sharper images.
The camera’s shutter durability is rated up to 100,000 exposures, appropriate for more high volume shooters. Canon does not publish official shutter durability ratings for the Rebel series of digital SLR cameras.
Vari-angle Touch Screen 3.0-inch Clear View LCD II monitor enables flexible positioning
The EOS 80D camera comes with a Vari-angle Touch Screen 3.0-inch Clear View LCD monitor II for shooting videos and stills. The LCD screen can be adjusted at a variety of angles, high or low, with up to 270° of vertical rotation and up to 175° of horizontal rotation. Allows for greater creativity and flexibility when shooting both videos and stills.
The screen is touch-sensitive, delivering intuitive touch panel operation. Two-finger touch gestures can be used for zooming or changing images. Menu and quick control settings can be accessed, and focus point and shutter release can be activated with the touch of a fingertip using Touch AF.
Displaying fine detail (at approximately 1.04 million dots), this screen can be ideal for composing and reviewing images. The LCD’s surface is also treated with a smudge-resistant coating to help minimize fingerprints and maintain a bright, clear image display, even in bright light.
45 point all cross-type AF system
The 45-point all cross-type viewfinder AF system in the new Canon EOS 80D DSLR camera, compared to 19-points in the Canon EOS 70D DSLR camera, is now wider both horizontally and vertically for easier compositions with off-center subjects. According to Canon, low light AF performance has been improved all the way down to EV-3 at the center point to achieve sharp results even in extreme low-light situations.
New EF-S 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS Nano USM Kit Zoom Lens
To match the versatility of EOS 80D, Canon’s new EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM provides high performance auto-focus for movies and stills. The EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM is the first of Canon’s lenses to feature Nano USM focus technology, designed to deliver smooth, quiet AF for movies and fast focus speed for stills.
The lens also incorporates an optical Image Stabilizer system that compensates for up to four stops of camera shake providing for sharper handheld shooting. A Dynamic IS function specifically helps to reduce camera shake when recording video.
Canon Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E1
Canon has also announced a new optional Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E1, a compact and lightweight accessory designed for the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM to enable smooth, fingertip zoom control when shooting movies. Zoom speed is controlled using the speed level switch and the zoom lever. Users can adjust zooming speed to suit their capture needs.
The PZ-E1 Power Zoom Adapter can be controlled via Wi-Fi when attached to the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Nano USM zoom lens and used with the Canon 80D DSLR.
The Canon 80D price in Canada goes up by around $215 if you add the Canon PZ-E1 Power Zoom Adapter to the camera purchase.
Full 1080p HD video recording up to 60 fps
The EOS 80D features Full HD (1080p) movie capture, with continuous AF at variable frame rates up to 50 or 60fps – ideal for fast moving action or slow-motion footage. HDR movie and creative filters, including Dream, Old movies, Memory, Dramatic and Black and White, enable in-camera creative effects.
Videographers can also enjoy full control over audio levels and capture professional quality sound with headphone and microphone inputs. Movies can be recorded in MP4 format with IPB compression at up to 60fps for easy sharing and in MOV All-I compression at up to 30 fps.
Note: Canon Corporation Japan has now made available a few Canon EOS 80D sample images and videos.
New Canon Directional Stereo Microphone DM-E1
In addition to the new lens and power zoom adapter, Canon is introducing the first Canon-branded external microphone for the EOS system, the Canon Directional Stereo Microphone DM-E1.
This new accessory microphone will help improve sound quality while shooting video, allowing users to rotate the direction of the microphone up and down from 90 to 120 degrees depending on the shooting situation.
The Canon DM-E1’s durable shock mount construction helps to reduce camera operation noise and lens drive sounds and is built to withstand the rigors of a variety of shooting situations.
Featuring a frequency response range of 50Hz to 16kHz, the DM-E1 comes with a wind screen to help limit peripheral sound from wind and other outside factors, allowing shooters to utilize the microphone in a broad amount of shooting situations.
Featuring a built-in power supply from a single “button-type” lithium cell battery, the DM-E1 also has a power indicator lamp allowing users to easily check its battery level.
The Canon 80D price in Canada goes up by around $370 if you add the DM-E1 directional microphone to the camera purchase.
Body durability and weather-resistance
The Canon EOS 80D incorporates a number of weather-resistant gaskets and seals, to minimize problems from dust, dirt, and moisture. Shooting in the rain and under harsh environments is less of a concern with the Canon EOS 80D compared to using one of Canon’s more entry level digital SLR cameras that do not offer the same degree of protection. One of the reasons you have to pay a significant premium for the Canon EOS 80D.
Weather-resistant seals and gaskets, shown in red in the above graphic, are placed at most buttons, dial positions, and several important seams on the Canon EOS 80D. Parts of the camera that are designed to resist moisture and foreign material are illustrated in green.
Auto pop-up, retractable, built-in flash
The Canon 80D features a built-in auto pop-up flash, great for close fill flash situations. The camera also offers a dedicated E-TTL external flash compatible hotshoe. Flash compensation is available from ±3 stops in 1/3- or 1/2-stop increments.
The built-in flash on the Canon EOS 80D can be used as a master to wirelessly trigger one or a group of external dedicated speedlite flashes for access to more creative flash photography. Flash output and ratios can be controlled automatically or adjusted manually.
7560-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor which enables Colour Tracking to accurately detect skin colour
The Canon EOS 80D incorporates a 7560-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor that helps ensure accurate exposure, and is able to utilize Colour Tracking technology to detect skin colour and help provide precise autofocus.
When a skin tone is detected, AI Servo AF starts off on skin-coloured points, then tracks the subject based of the original AF point’s colour information, maintaining focus on the person even when they’re in motion.
The Canon 80D digital SLR camera features a bright optical pentaprism viewfinder that offers approximately 100% coverage and 22mm eye-point and 0.95x magnification.
One of the step up features associated with the Canon EOS 80D versus Canon’s more entry level Rebel series of DSLR cameras, is the difference in the viewing quality provided by the premium viewfinder incorporated in the EOS 80D.
Full Manual Control or Automatic Ease of Use
The Canon EOS 80D DSLR features a number of buttons and control dials for adjusting settings on the camera. The camera provides for manual exposure control settings, as well as a range of user friendly Scene modes or a basic Auto mode for point and shoot simplicity.
More advanced photographers will find a lot of creative control on the Canon EOS 80D digital SLR camera, while more novice users can take advantage of the automatic modes while still benefiting from the camera’s enhanced technology and performance capabilities.
Wi-Fi and NFC Connectivity
The Canon EOS 80D incorporates wireless technology in the camera. The camera’s exposure settings, such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focus and shutter can be operated wirelessly using a compatible iOS or Android smartphone with the free Canon Camera Connect app.
Using a compatible smartphone with the Camera Connect app installed, you can shoot remotely from a distance, even in Live View mode, for those difficult-to-capture shots; you can also review images on the EOS 80D without having to take it out of the bag, and easily transfer and save images directly from the camera to a smartphone.
Timer shooting functions
The EOS 80D features a range of built-in timer shooting functions that enable photographers and videographers to control their camera over set lengths of time, to record a slowly changing scene and create time-lapse movies.
The in-camera Timelapse mode allows videographers to specify the number of shots and time interval – the camera will then display the clip length and output a Full HD movie.
The interval timer allows full resolution images to be recorded at pre-programmed intervals of between one second, through to 99 hours, 59 mins and 59 seconds, and between one, 99 or unlimited shots.
For long-exposure photography, the camera’s shutter can also be locked up in the bulb mode for a specified length of time.
Canon EOS 80D Accessory Vertical Release Battery Grip BG-E14
The Canon EOS 80D is compatible with the optional Canon BG-E14 vertical release battery grip (same as the earlier Canon 70D DSLR). The Canon BG-E14 allows users to load a choice of one, or two LP-E6 battery packs. You also have the option of using six AA batteries with the included AA battery holder insert. The Canon 80D price in Canada goes up by around $250 to $300, based on current street prices, if you add the Canon BG-E14 to the camera purchase.
The design of the grip improves shooting in the vertical orientation and also provides an overall more ergonomic structure for holding the 80D.
A second shutter release button, main dial, multi-controller, AF point selection button, AE/FE lock button, AF start button, and multi-function button are all integrated into the grip for improved and versatile handling.
