We recently had the opportunity to try out the latest Canon T5i digital SLR camera in combination with Canon’s new EF-S 18-55mm IS STM standard kit zoom lens.
The Canon T5i digital SLR replaces last years Canon T4i as the new flagship in the Canon Rebel series lineup of family and enthusiast oriented APS-C sensor size digital SLR cameras. To see how the Canon T5i performs, check out our Canon T5i sample images gallery below.
With only a year between the release of the Canon T4i and the T5i digital SLR, the question is what updates are provided by the new model? The answer is that there are no significant changes.
The only real difference between the Canon T5i versus the T4i is that the Canon T5i digital SLR now provides real-time preview of Creative Filters when the camera is set to Live View mode, and also incorporates a redesigned mode dial that rotates a full 360 degrees. The other noticeable difference is that the finish on the Canon T5i has a “richer” look versus the T4i digital SLR.
The good news is that by employing the same core technology as the very capable Canon Rebel T4i, the Canon T5i offers the same high level of image quality as its predecessor. The Canon T5i digital SLR features the same 18 megapixel APS-C size sensor, utilizes the same DIGIC 5 image processor, and incorporates the identical 3-inch high resolution swivel and tilt LCD monitor with Touch Screen Interface found on the T4i.
The Canon T5i maintains the Canon T4i Hybrid AF system, an enhanced Auto Focus (AF) system designed to provide better AF capabilities during Live View and movie recording.
In terms of movie recording, the Canon T5i provides for the ability to record Full HD (1920x1080p) video complete with stereo sound. A dedicated movie recording button and the camera’s Auto settings makes it easy for novice videographers to get started.
The Canon T5i also offers advanced video recording capabilities to satisfy the needs of enthusiasts, including the option of adding an external microphone via the dedicated microphone plug. Manual exposure control and frame rates of 30, 25 and 24 fps at full resolution are also available.
The Canon T5i likewise maintains the same continuous shooting rate as the T4i, offering continuous shooting capability up to 5 frames per second at full image size.
The main difference between the Canon T5i versus the T4i DSLR is that the T5i digital SLR body is available in a combination kit with the newly announced Canon EF-S 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 STM IS wide angle zoom lens. The new standard kit zoom lens serves as an update to the older Canon EF-S 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 IS II zoom supplied with the T4i and other Canon Rebel DSLR’s.
The new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM standard zoom lens is designed to complement the Movie Servo AF feature found on the Canon T5i DSLR by incorporating a compact six-group zoom system and a new stepping motor and focus mechanism to deliver smooth and quiet continuous AF during movie shooting.
Still photography benefits from a high-speed CPU and an optimized AF algorithm. Full-time manual focus is available in AF mode and the front element does not rotate during focus, ideal for use with polarizing filters. Handheld photography is enhanced by the lens’ Optical Image Stabilizer system, offering the equivalent of four stops of compensation. All in all a nice compact and versatile wide angle zoom.
Canon T5i Sample Images with EF-S 18-55mm STM IS
Considering that the Canon T5i digital SLR features the same sensor and imaging processing technology as the earlier Canon T4i, the image quality seen above in our Canon T5i sample images gallery is equivalent to what one would expect to see produced by the Canon T4i with the same lens attached.
The new Canon EF-S 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 IS STM zoom does feature advantages over its predecessor, the Canon EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS II standard kit lens. The new STM lens technology offers quieter and more accurate focusing providing for improved video recording performance and a better level of general image quality.
The Canon T5i EOS Rebel Digital SLR camera is available for a manufacturer’s recommended retail price of $779.95 for the body only, and $929.99 for the T5i bundled with the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens kit.
Canon T5i Digital SLR Camera Major Features
Canon CMOS sensor: Exclusively designed and manufactured by Canon to work in combination with its own DIGIC processors, Canon’s CMOS technology integrates advanced noise reduction circuitry at each pixel site, delivering virtually noise-free images. In comparison with CCD technology, the lower power consumption characteristics of Canon’s CMOS sensors also contribute to longer battery life.
Signal conversion in Canon’s CMOS sensors is handled by individual amplifiers at each pixel site. Unnecessary charge transfer operations are avoided, vastly speeding up the process of getting the signal to the image processor. Noise is reduced, power consumption is limited and faster frame rate potential is increased.
The Rebel T5i’s APS-C sensor features a Hybrid AF System, which uses the central pixels of the sensor to enable continuous AF when shooting in Live View Mode or when recording EOS Movies. The Hybrid AF system uses a combination of both phase detection and contrast AF to ensure quick and accurate auto focus.
The sensor design also produces high image quality at both high and low ISO sensitivities, with 14-bit AD conversion for finer tonal gradation.
Canon T5i with DIGIC 5 Image Processor: The latest generation of Canon’s DIGIC processor – DIGIC 5 – has been engineered to process more detailed image data, faster than ever before, accurately reproducing every part of the scene with natural colours and smooth tones.
The power of DIGIC 5 featured in the Canon T5i digital SLR camera enables photographers to utilise a range of advanced shooting settings and modes to enhance image quality or creative scope. For example, with DIGIC 5, the Canon T5i is able to shoot high resolution stills continuously at 5 frames per second, capture low-light images at ISO 12800 with minimal noise and enable new features including HDR Backlight Control.
EOS Movie: EOS Movie allows users to record Full HD (1920x1080p) movies with full manual control of exposure and frame rates of 30, 25 and 24 fps at full resolution, with 60 and 50 fps available at 720p resolution.
Video Snapshot: The Video Snapshot feature incorporated in the Canon T5i enables the user to capture short video clips of 2, 4 or 8 seconds in length. These short snapshots are then stitched together into one file as a Video Snapshot Album, creating a dynamic, fast-paced movie sequence.
Once video clip duration has been selected, every time the Movie shooting button is pressed a video clip of that length will be captured. For example, if a 4 second Video Snapshot is selected, the Video Snapshot Album will be created consisting of 4-second movie clips.
When playing a Movie, Video Snapshot Album or Slideshow, background music (BGM) can be applied, whether on the camera’s touch screen, or on a larger HDTV using the camera’s HDMI connection. To do this, users must convert audio files to the supported .WAV format, before using EOS Utility software to upload the files to the camera’s SD card ready for selection during playback.
A choice of five music tracks supplied with the camera can also be used. With the Rebel T5i, users can now also edit video snapshots, changing the order or deleting of clips in-camera.
Vari-Angle Clear View LCD II Touch screen: The Canon T5i features a 3.0-inch 3:2 Vari-Angle Clear View LCD II Touch screen which employs capacitive technology to support natural, gesture-based control during shooting and playback – providing support for multi-touch gestures including pinching, swiping and dragging. The touch interface allows users to touch-select AF points, track faces and objects or adjust image settings instantly.
Touch Control screen: The screen itself offers an approximate resolution of 1.04 million dots, allowing highquality viewing of images, and focus checks, in playback. A solid construction eliminates the layer of air between the LCD and its hardened glass protective cover, reducing reflections. Additionally, an anti-smudge coating ensures marks on the screen are prevented and colours on the monitor appear natural and close to the sRGB colour space.
The vari-angle screen on the Canon T5i has been designed to open sideways, enabling photographers to shoot from unusual angles, even while the camera is attached to a tripod. The screen flips out 175° and can then rotate 90° forwards or 180° backwards, allowing the photographer to view the screen from low or high angles, and even from in front of the camera.
iFCL metering system with 63-zone Dual-layer Metering sensor: The iFCL system uses focus, colour and luminance information to determine consistently exposed shots. All focus points provide distance information to the metering system to determine the location of the subject and allow the algorithm to weight the exposure accordingly.
The Canon T5i digital SLR features a metering sensor with 63 zones, compatible with all nine AF points. Typically, metering sensors are more sensitive to red subjects which can lead to over-exposure. The Canon T5i counters this with the dual layer sensor, which has one layer sensitive to red and green light and one that is sensitive to blue and green light. The metering algorithm then compares the level of the two layers and adjusts the meter reading accordingly.
Integrated Speedlite transmitter: The Integrated Speedlite transmitter on the Canon T5i allows the camera body to control two flash groups: A, and B. Thanks to the Easy Wireless function, photographers can easily set up more creative, off-camera lighting when using a Speedlite 270EXII or 320EX.
Handheld Night Scene: Handheld Night Scene mode can be accessed directly from the mode dial located on the top of the Canon T5i and captures four continuous shots at a shutter speed fast enough to prevent camera shake. The four shots are then combined to create one well-exposed shot with minimal blur in low light, removing the need for a tripod when shooting in the dark.
Multi Shot Noise Reduction: With Multi Shot Noise Reduction, the Canon T5i captures four shots in quick succession and combines them to produce a single image with minimal noise. This new function has been designed to be more effective than Strong Noise Reduction.
HDR Backlight Control: The HDR Backlight Control can be accessed directly from the mode dial and captures three continuous shots at a range of exposures (under-, correctly-, and over-exposed). These images are then combined to create one image that features maximum detail in highlight and shadow areas, even in backlit conditions.
EOS Scene Detection Technology: EOS Scene Detection Technology automatically analyses faces, brightness, movement, contrast and distance in the scene, with information provided as feedback to the Scene Intelligent Auto mode.
Scene Intelligent Auto: Scene Intelligent Auto takes the information gathered by the EOS Scene Detection System and determines the best settings to capture the scene. For example, when shooting portraits, the settings are adjusted to make skin tones appear more natural.
Picture Styles: Picture Style presets can be likened to different film types – each one offering a different colour response. Within each selectable preset, photographers have control over sharpness, contrast, colour tone and saturation. The camera’s Standard Picture Style is designed to deliver immediately-usable JPEG images without need for additional processing. When shooting RAW images Picture Styles can be revised with Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software.
The presets available with the Canon T5i are:
• Standard: For crisp, vivid images that don’t require post-processing.
• Portrait: Optimises colour tone and saturation and weakens sharpening to achieve attractive, natural skin tones.
• Landscape: For punchier greens and blues with stronger sharpening to give a crisp edge to mountain, tree and building outlines.
• Neutral: Ideal for post-processing.
• Faithful: Adjusts colour to match the subject when shot under a colour temperature of 5200K.
• Monochrome: For black and white shooting with a range of filter effects (yellow, orange, red and green) and toning effects (sepia, blue, purple and green.
The Canon T5i also features Picture Style Auto. This new Picture Style makes fine adjustments, based on the EOS Scene Detection System’s analysis, to create a Picture Style for the image. Three User Defined Picture Styles can be selected to store customised pre-sets created using the supplied Picture Style Editor, or any of the presets available for download from Canon’s web site.
Basic+: Basic+ is a creative imaging function that was first introduced in the EOS 60D, which makes it easier to create desired image effects when shooting a scene. With Basic+, photographers have the option to apply a creative intent to their images whilst using the scene-based modes.
Shoot by ambience: exposure compensation and white balance are adjusted according to preset styles to create ambience or tone in the image
Shoot by lighting or scene type: a simplified form of white balance, which allows photographers to change the white balance settings according to more understandable terms such as “Daylight”, “Shade”, “Cloudy”, “Sunset”, “Tungsten light” and “Fluorescent light”
Auto Lighting Optimizer (ALO): Auto Lighting Optimiser analyses the image and selectively adjusts the brightness to achieve a more even result. For example, when a person is backlit, ALO detects the face and increases its brightness to ensure a more accurate image.
Lens peripheral illumination correction: The lens peripheral illumination correction function uses the power of the DIGIC image processor to improve image quality by maintaining evenness of illumination from corner to corner, even when shooting wide open with a zoom lens. When shooting in RAW this correction can be further adjusted using Digital Photo Professional.
Creative Filters: The Canon T5i digital SLR camera provides a range of creative effect filters which can be applied to RAW images and all JPEG images. Since the filter can be applied after the shot is taken, users can apply different filters to the same image and see the effects:
• NEW Art bold effect (Low/Standard/Strong): Creates an “oil painting” type effect with the ability to adjust the contrast and colour saturation.
• NEW Water Painting effect (Light/Standard/Deep): Creates a “watercolour painting” effect with soft colours. You can adjust the colour density according to three levels of intensity.
• Fish-eye effect: Creates a barrel-shaped distortion similar to a fish-eye lens. The effect can be adjusted, and, depending on the level of distortion, the image periphery may be cropped.
• Grainy B/W: Creates a grainy, black-and-white image. The effect can be emphasized by adjusting the contrast.
• Soft focus: Produces a soft result. This can be increased by adjusting the blur.
• Toy camera effect: Provides colour cast typical of toy cameras. The four corners are also darkened. The image looks soft with a subtle grainy look. The colour cast can be changed to cool or warm colours.
• Miniature effect: Can be set by the user to make part of the image look sharp. The orientation (vertical or horizontal) of the area can be changed by pressing the INFO button.
EOS Integrated Cleaning System: The Canon T5i digital SLR camera features the EOS Integrated Cleaning System, used to combat sensor dust in three important ways: Reduce, Repel and Remove.
Reduce – Internal camera mechanisms are designed to minimise dust generation. The redesigned body cap prevents dust generation through wear on the cap itself
Repel – Anti-static technologies, including a magnesium fluoride coating, are applied to the low-pass filter covering the front of the sensor so as not to attract dust
Remove – A Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit uses ultrasonic vibrations to shake dust from the infrared filter for a period of approximately one second after each start up. For instant shooting after power up, this feature is disabled immediately as the shutter release is depressed The front surface of the Rebel T5i’s low-pass filter features a fluorine coating to minimize dust adhesion to the sensor.
The Canon T5i digital SLR also features an internal Dust Delete Data system, which can map the position of visible dust on the sensor. This can then be deleted automatically after the shoot with the latest Digital Photo Professional software.
Digital Photo Professional Software (v3.11): The Canon T5i DSLR features the most advanced version of Digital Photo Professional (DPP) yet. Digital Photo Professional software provides high speed, high quality processing of lossless RAW images. Processing with DPP allows real-time display and immediate application of image adjustments, giving control over RAW image variables such as white balance, dynamic range, exposure compensation, noise reduction and colour tone – plus the ability to view Auto Focus points on an image.
The Lens Aberration correction tool allows precise correction of different types of distortion and chromatic aberration. The new Digital Lens Optimizer optical enhancement function improves image quality by maximizing optical performance.
Digital Photo Professional supports sRGB, Adobe RGB, ColorMatch RGB, Apple RGB and Wide Gamut RGB colour spaces. ICC (International Colour Consortium) profiles can be attached to TIFF or JPEG images when converted from RAW. This allows faithful reproduction of colours in software applications that support ICC profiles, such as Adobe Photoshop. For improved efficiency, a set of image adjustments can be saved as a recipe and applied.
Digital Lens Optimizer – new in Digital Photo Professional v3.11 New in DPP v3.11 is Digital Lens Optimizer – a new tool designed to drastically improve image resolution by taking the final image closer to how it was seen by the photographer.
Digital Lens Optimizer (DLO) precisely imitates lens operation, with a series of complex mathematical functions replicating each stage of the journey of light through the optical path. Using this information, DLO can correct a range of typical optical aberrations, and loss of the resolution caused by a low pass filter, by applying an inverse function to each shot that takes the image closer to how the scene looks to the naked eye. This creates exceptionally detailed, high-quality images with highly manageable file sizes, providing photographers with maximum image quality and greater flexibility in post-production.
EOS Utility: The latest version of EOS Utility provides essential support for Live View remote shooting (with the ability to overlay an image to assist with alignment of subsequent shots during product photography), camera configuration and image transfers.
Tightly integrated with Digital Photo Professional, EOS Utility can be configured to monitor ‘hot’ folders, automatically renaming and moving incoming images to a structured file system. Images can also be tagged with EXIF data, including copyright information. Newly added is the ability to register background music, with users now able to add or remove .WAV format files from the playlist used by the camera.
Picture Style Editor: Picture Style Editor allows photographers to create individual Picture Styles that meet their personal requirements. Each Picture Style contains detailed information on how specific colours should be represented within an image. Once new Picture Styles have been created, they can be uploaded directly into the camera and applied to JPEG or RAW images. When working with RAW files in DPP, both personal Picture Styles and predetermined Picture Styles can be adjusted.
ImageBrowser EX: ImageBrowser EX is a software programme for viewing, editing and organising images and is intended for users who shoot mainly in JPEG format. It merges the popular functionality of ZoomBrowser EX and ImageBrowser into one programme, enabling users to perform basic image editing, including brightness and colour balance, with an in-software connection to DPP for RAW image editing. Users can also select, rename, and resize multiple images at once, and print images via a range of simplified integrated printing options.

Hybrid AF Capabilities: the Canon T5i features a nine-point all cross-type AF array, with a high-precision dual-cross f/2.8 point at centre. The Canon T5i incorporates a Hybrid CMOS AF system which increases AF speed by reducing the camera’s need to “hunt” for focus. The result is fast continuous AF when shooting photos and movies in Live View. Because the camera’s cross-type AF points have two-dimensional contrast detection, the EOS Rebel T5i provides highly accurate focus regardless of your shot composition and ensures great focus no matter where the subject is located in the frame. The addition of the dual-cross point in the centre allows for much faster and precise focusing for photographers using high-speed f/2.8 lenses.
Using the camera’s touch panel, parents can select their child on the camera’s LCD screen and the camera will remain focused on that child while they remain in-frame, ensuring sharp focus in crowds and group shots. The camera’s AF system enables touch autofocus for shooting photos and movies in Live View. Touch Focus can be used in video mode, with or without an STM lens. However, the effects of continuous AF will only be achieved with the use of an STM lens.
Continuous AF during HD Video Recording: the Canon T5i includes Canon’s Movie Servo AF for recording video. When used with Canon’s new EF and EF-S STM lenses, the camera can provide smooth and quiet continuous AF while recording video. This enables the new Canon T5i digital SLR camera to achieve AF while still retaining a DSLR camera’s signature background blur and image quality, producing stunning videos of parties, events, summer vacations or graduations.
When shooting video with Canon’s STM lenses, AF also remains silent, helping ensure you only capture the sound of the scene being recorded. The EOS Rebel T5i features a built-in stereo microphone that includes an attenuator function to reduce audio distortion in extra loud situations.
Touch-Screen:The Canon T5i digital SLR includes a Vari-angle Touch Screen 3.0-inch Clear View LCD monitor II featuring 1.04 million dot resolution for clear viewing. Camera operation has been simplified through this feature allowing for Touch Focus or Touch Shutter controls via the vari-angle touch-screen.
The vari-angle touch-screen flips out to the left and rotates 180 degrees forward and 90 degrees backward, making tough above-the-head and low-to-the-ground shots easy, and allowing improved views during photo or video capture. That means the overhead shot taken in a crowd or at a graduation march just got a little easier to shoot.

Canon’s Scene Intelligent Auto mode – the “green” mode on the dial – analyzes the scene being shot, taking into account faces, colours, brightness, movement and contrast, to select appropriate camera settings and help produce the best possible image.
The Canon T5i is also compatible with Canon’s previously introduced GP-E2 GPS Receiver that can be mounted to the camera’s accessory shoe. The GPS unit was created to serve outdoor photographers; it records shooting locations including latitude, longitude and altitude, as well as camera direction. A Logging function can tell how far a photographer has traveled as well.
Expanded Lineup of STM Lenses: Canon is expanding the lineup of STM lenses, giving users three choices that will allow for the capture of stunning images and video with the EOS Rebel T5i – the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM, the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM and the new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens. The EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens offers high magnification in a compact and lightweight EF-S standard zoom lens with an optical image stabilizer for up to four equivalent stops for shake correction.
