Canon SL1 digital SLR camera with Canon EF-S 18-55mm STM lens

Canon has announced the Canon SL1 digital SLR camera ( named EOS 100D in Europe), an entry level model aimed at family and travel photographers. The Canon SL1 digital SLR camera is the smallest and lightest APS-C DSLR in its class – measuring just 116.8×90.7×69.4mm (WxHxD) and weighing only 407g.

Small in size yet big on features and functionality, the Canon SL1 offers a high resolution 18MP CMOS sensor, a large 3-inch high resolution Touch Screen LCD monitor for composing and viewing images, a traditional optical viewfinder, and incorporates Canon’s second generation hybrid AF system providing enhanced Live View recording capability.

Combined with a range of user friendly Auto modes, and manual override exposure options for still shooting, the Canon Rebel SL1 digital SLR also offers full 1080p HD movie recording with sound.

The new Canon SL1 digital SLR camera will be available in April for an estimated retail price of $679.99 for the body alone or $829.99 bundled with the new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM kit lens.

• APS-C Hybrid CMOS AF II Sensor: Designed and manufactured by Canon to work in combination with its own DIGIC image processors, Canon’s CMOS technology integrates advanced noise reduction circuitry at each pixel site, delivering virtually noise-free images. In comparison with CCD technology, the lower power consumption characteristics of Canon’s CMOS sensors also contribute to longer battery life.

The Canon Rebel SL1 / EOS 100D features a new Hybrid CMOS AF II Sensor that uses a combination of phase detection pixels located on the sensor, along with contrast AF to acquire swift and accurate focus. Compared to Hybrid CMOS AF, the new Hybrid AF II Sensor has phase detection pixels over a larger proportion of the sensor’s area – approximately 80% of the height and width. As a result, the Rebel SL1 is able to quickly achieve focus across the entire scene – both in stills and Full HD movies.

• Enhanced Shooting Modes and Creative Filters: The Canon SL1 features a range of easy-to-use shooting modes and Creative Filters – making it simple for photographers to start with creative pre-sets and then explore their creativity. The Scene Intelligent Auto mode automatically detects the scene being shot and selects the best combination of exposure settings for the scene so that users can simply focus on image composition.

Thanks to new ‘real-time filter previews’ Canon’s range of Creative Filters, including Fisheye and Miniature Effect, can now be previewed during image capture – allowing photographers to view and select the most suitable effect for a specific shot before pressing the shutter button. Photographers can also learn how to adjust their images with an enhanced Creative Auto Mode and via the Rebel SL1’s new Extra Effect Shot mode photographers can capture two images simultaneously – one with a Creative Filter applied and one a standard image.

The Canon SL1 offers a range of dedicated scene modes including new ‘Kids’, ‘Food’ and ‘Candlelight’ modes, designed to ensure optimum results in a range of situations.

• FULL 1080p HD Movie: With the Canon Rebel SL1 aspiring filmmakers can shoot EOS Movies in Full HD (1920x1080p) resolution. The Hybrid AF II of the Canon SL1 is designed to keep the stars of the movie in focus, with continuous AF constantly tracking subjects during shooting. Additionally, a Video Snapshot mode makes it easy to capture and edit short video clips to bring exciting events, such as road trips and weddings, to life.

Creative Auto with Extra Effect Shot and Background Blurring
Creative Auto is a shooting mode that offers an easy to navigate range of creative options for beginner DSLR users wishing to experiment. In addition to the pre-existing Creative Auto modes, the Rebel SL1 includes two new features – Extra Effect Shot and enhanced Background Blurring.

Extra Effect Shot allows users to capture two images simultaneously with just one press of the shutter. One image is captured using the camera’s standard image settings, and an additional image is also taken at the same time with a Creative Effect applied. Users can choose from a range of creative effects when using Extra Effect Shot, including Creative Filters, Ambience Effects and Pictures Styles. Once both images have beencaptured they appear side-by-side on the Rebel SL1’s LCD screen, making it easy for users to see the impact of their creative choice.

The Canon SL1 digital SLR camera features a new Background Blurring function, which can also be previewed on the LCD, and uses the aperture priority AE settings to apply image blur, allowing users to experiment with blurring the background in a simple way.

• Canon STM Lens Technology: EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Kit Zoom Lens: The new Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM features Canon’s Stepping Motor (STM) technology – providing smooth, near-silent auto focus – ideal for shooting movies or quiet situations. The STM used in the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM is a lead screw type, which is quieter and smoother compared to the more compact gear type mechanism.

• Non-rotating front element (EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM) The EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM features a new non rotating front element ideal for using filters. The lens has been engineered so that the front element does not rotate when users adjust the focus. As a result, any filters applied to the front of the lens remain in a static position, even when the focus ring is adjusted, therefore removing the need to readjust the filter position during shooting – perfect for use with polarising filters.

Canon SL1 Digital SLR Camera Press Release

MISSISSAUGA, ON, 21 March 2013 – Continuing the quest to deliver superb product innovations, Canon Canada Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions celebrating its 40th anniversary, today announced the world’s smallest and lightest DSLR* camera: the EOS Rebel SL1 Digital SLR camera. The EOS Rebel SL1 features a newly-developed 18.0-megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor and high-performance DIGIC 5 Image Processor for exceptional image quality and speed. With its combination of lightweight size, ease of use and outstanding image quality, the EOS Rebel SL1 is perfect for users looking for the ideal camera to bring sightseeing on vacation or to capture the everyday.

“The Canon Rebel SL1 Digital SLR Camera represents a new era in DSLR versatility: ultra-portable, full-featured DSLR cameras,” said Ian Macfarlane, Senior Vice-President and General Manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group and Market Development Group, Canon Canada. “The EOS Rebel SL1 combines the high speed, high image quality and expanded shooting range of a DSLR camera, with the easy and fun usability of a point-and-shoot camera.”

Advanced Image Quality in a Compact Body
As the world’s smallest and lightest DSLR, the new camera body is 4.6 (w) x 3.57 (h) x 2.74 (d) inches, and weighs only 14.36 oz.** In comparison, the EOS Rebel SL1 is approximately 25 per cent smaller and 28 per cent lighter than the EOS Rebel T4i digital camera.

Canon SL1 / EOS 100D compared to Canon T4i

The Canon EOS Rebel SL1 features an 18.0-megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor that performs exceptionally well in both bright and dimly-lit shooting environments with an ISO range of 100-12800 (expandable to H: 25600) for photos and ISO-6400 (expandable to H: 12800) for video. Canon’s DIGIC 5 Image Processor technology allows for exceptional image quality and shooting speed up to four frames per second (fps).

The camera includes a new nine-point centre cross-type autofocus (AF) system to help achieve fast, sharp focus. The new AF system also includes a new Hybrid CMOS AF II sensor, which provides a wider focus area when shooting photos or video in Live View mode, and a continuous AF speed that’s increased from previous EOS models.

To help capture video with ease, the EOS Rebel SL1 features Canon’s Movie Servo AF, which provides continuous AF tracking of moving subjects. When shooting video with one of Canon’s new STM lenses, such as the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM, available in the standard lens kit, Movie Servo AF takes advantage of the lens’ stepping motor for smooth and quiet continuous AF.

Canon Rebel SL1 digital SLR camera side view

The camera is capable of Full HD shooting in a number of recording sizes and frame rates, and enables easy manual control of exposure, focus and Live View features. The combination of Canon’s new Hybrid CMOS AF system II and EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens is ideal for shooting video helping to ensure only the sounds of the scene are recorded.

Allowing for clear and easy viewing even in bright environments, the Touch Screen 3.0-inch Clear View LCD monitor II provides a rich and expansive display as well as providing intuitive touch panel operation. Two finger touch gestures (multi-touch) can be easily used for zooming or changing images, accessing menu and quick control settings, and activating focus point and shutter release while shooting.

Creativity at your Fingertips
The EOS Rebel SL1 encourages users to explore their creative side with a wide array of features for convenience and simple shooting. The EOS Rebel SL1 is equipped with Scene Intelligent Auto Mode, an advanced function that detects faces, colours, brightness, movement, contrast, distance and other factors and automatically adjusts and selects the exposure method needed. The results are photos with a wide dynamic range, ideal for users without advanced photography knowledge or experience.

Users can also access advanced imaging features like the new Effect Shot mode, which automatically creates two different shots, one with a selected creative filter and one without. In addition, Creative Filters and Background Blur Simulation can now be displayed in real time during Live View shooting. Editing photos is also a snap with the Rebel SL1’s in-camera editing and cropping functionality. This feature allows users to view and crop the image using the camera’s LCD touch screen and save the edited version as a separate file.
